The Diversity Engagement Survey (DES) was developed by the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS), in collaboration with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and DataStar, Inc., to measure how well academic medical centers are responding to the diversity of their community members (i.e., their faculty, staff, and students). By measuring the academic medicine environment through the lens of diversity and inclusion, the DES provides institutions with data on their level of active engagement by their members, their inclusive characteristics, and the degree to which their diverse groups experience inclusion.

The DES is 22 items long and can be administered to students, faculty, and staff. There is a minimal response burden, and the rich analyses will allow institutions to develop a meaningful inclusion scorecard that characterizes their progress toward creating an inclusive work environment.
